Ni’Ja Whitson is an interdisciplinary artist whose work engages a nexus of postmodern and African Diasporic performance practices. Her work includes collaboration in music and dance improvisational forms, international performance and workshop facilitation, and nationally touring visual and performance art exhibitions. She received a 2010-2011 Lisa Dershin residency award and is a 2011 Chicago DanceBridge resident artist. Her current projects include assistant and contributing choreographer to Dianne McIntyre for the Goodman Theater’s national touring production of Crowns, directed and written by Regina Taylor. She has facilitated performance/ethnographic projects in Brazil working with Capoeira and Candomblé communities and has conducted political and cultural ethnographic research in Tanzania with exiled women of the Black Panther Party as an Andrew W. Mellon Research Fellow.
This showcase will feature the work of 2011 TJI Participants Jonathan Kitt and Erica Mott @ Links Hall.

BIO
Virginia Grise is an award-winning theatre artist whose work pushes against the boundaries of traditional theatre and live performance. Her published work includes blu (Yale University Press), The Panza Monologues (University of Texas Press, forthcoming) and an edited a volume of Zapatista communiqués titled Conversations with Don Durito (Autonomedia Press). blu was a recipient of the Yale Drama Series Award, a finalist for the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Latino/a Playwriting Award and Alliance Theatre’s Kendeda Award. Virginia holds a MFA in Writing for Performance from the California Institute of the Arts.

Aligned with the core precepts of the theatrical jazz aesthetic [presence, breath, listening, body-centering, improvisation, simultaneous truths, collaboration, virtuosity & metamorphosis], this workshop focuses on the body as a canvas for crafting evocative performance; drawing upon legacies from deep within the recesses of cultural memory, spirituality and personal her/histories.
