I visited Dr. Meredith Gadsby and Dr. Wendy Kozol’s classes and did a reading in the Afrikan Heritage House of which Courtney Patterson is The Faculty-in-Residence.

My visit was part of the MRC’s My Name Is My Own Speaker Series. After my reading I asked if anyone in the audience wanted to share/take the mic and Haydee Souffrant just tore the spot up with song and verse! My artist friend Kantara Souffrant took me to hang out at Ade’s Place/a store full of amazing treasures from different parts of Africa. Ade’s Place is owned by Oberlin’s Artist-in-Residence of African American Studies Adenike Sharpley.

I met mystery writer Joanne Dobson who happened to be visiting campus and I crossed paths with poet/educator/performer kay ulanday barrett who was arriving to perform for the MRC the night I left. You know I do love me some good times/great coffee/good eats/and great hospitality/and they got all that DOWN at the MRC! Yessuh/sho nuff/indeed…I had a great time!

Save and Sustain BookWoman

Save BookWoman!
Current Situation

BookWoman must raise $50,000 by mid-December — in addition to ongoing sales — in order to enter into a lease agreement for a new space. Otherwise, the store will close.

Why BookWoman Matters:
BookWoman is one of 13 remaining independent women’s bookstores in the country — and the only one in Texas. Independent bookstores provide a venue for small presses and alternative viewpoints, in a publishing environment increasingly ruled by corporate conglomerates.

BookWoman is also a vital center for community and social activism.

Dramaturgy

I had the great fortune to dramaturg early in the process of Daniel Alexander Jones’ new creation Qualities Of Light. We Worked the Work at New Dramatists
